The DAX 40 is Germany’s stock index that tracks the performance of the 40 largest companies listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. As the leading index of the largest economy in Europe, the DAX 40 is one of the most watched and traded indices worldwide and is often used as a barometer for Germany and Europe’s economic growth. Some of the most well-known stocks listed on the GER40 include SAP, Adidas, Siemens, Allianz, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, BMW, and Deutsche Borse.
Like all global stock indices, trading the DAX 40 can only be done through derivative instruments, which are basically financial contracts linked to the value of the GER40 index. These include futures and options, ETFs, and CFDs.

The easiest way to get exposure to the DAX40 index is through a CFD trading account. The reasons for that include the low trading costs, high leverage ratio of 30:1, and the ability to go long and short without having to meet strict margin requirements.
In September 2021, the Deutsche Boerse increased the index holdings from 30 to 40 companies. Ironically, many still use the DAX 30 as the index name, however, since 2021, the DAX 30 became DAX40.
As of June 2024, the DAX 40 is trading near its all-time high, around 18,650. The German index has a YTD of slightly over 11% and a 1-Year return of nearly 17%. Looking ahead into the second half of 2024, the DAX 40 uptrend is expected to continue, although modestly.
